Software Licence
The licence the Cotterpin software is available under, in plain English, with the full text.
- The Cotterpin source code is available under the PolyForm Internal Use License 1.0.0: you may use and change it for the internal business operations of you and your company, but you may not distribute it.
- Paid capabilities — the Pro enforcer components and other content fetched under a subscription — are licensed under our Terms of Service while your subscription is active.
- The licensor is Cotterpin Technologies Ltd. No right is granted beyond the licence text and our Terms.
1. Status of this licence
The Cotterpin software is licensed by Cotterpin Technologies Ltd, which owns its copyright, under the PolyForm Internal Use License 1.0.0. This licence has applied since 11 October 2026. Nothing in it limits any right the law gives you that cannot be excluded by contract, such as the right under UK law to decompile a program where that is needed to make it work with other software.
2. What the licence lets you do
This is a plain-English summary of the licence. The full licence text below is what governs.
- Use: you may do anything with the software that would otherwise infringe the licensor's copyright, for a permitted purpose. Using it for the internal business operations of you and your company is a permitted purpose.
- Change it: you may make changes and new works based on the software, for a permitted purpose.
- Patents: you get a licence to the licensor's patent claims that you would infringe by using the software — which ends if you claim the software infringes a patent.
- Your company includes organisations that control, are controlled by, or are under common control with the organisation you work for.
3. What it does not let you do
- Distribute the software, or your changes to it, to anyone else.
- Sublicense or transfer your licence.
- Assume any other licence is implied.
4. If you break it
The first time you are told in writing that you have broken the licence, it continues if you come into full compliance, and take practical steps to correct past violations, within 32 days. Otherwise all your licences end immediately.
5. No warranty
As far as the law allows, the software comes as is, without warranty, and the licensor is not liable for damages arising from the licence or the software. If you are a consumer, our Terms of Service explain the rights you keep.
6. Paid capabilities and subscriptions
The Pro enforcer components and any other licensed content you fetch under a subscription are not covered by the PolyForm licence. They are licensed to you by Cotterpin under section 8 of our Terms of Service: a non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use them on the machines registered to your licence, for your own or your organisation's internal purposes, while your subscription is active. When it ends, Cotterpin runs in Watch. Our Acceptable Use Policy also applies.
7. Third-party components
Third-party components included in Cotterpin are licensed under their own terms, listed in the software bill of materials (sbom.cdx.json, CycloneDX) published with each release.
8. Full licence text
The text below is copied verbatim from LICENSE.md, which ships with the software. The canonical text is published by the PolyForm Project at polyformproject.org/licenses/internal-use/1.0.0.
PolyForm Internal Use License 1.0.0
Acceptance
In order to get any license under these terms, you must agree to them as both strict obligations and conditions to all your licenses.
Copyright License
The licensor grants you a copyright license for the software to do everything you might do with the software that would otherwise infringe the licensor's copyright in it for any permitted purpose. However, you may only make changes or new works based on the software according to Changes and New Works License, and you may not distribute the software.
Changes and New Works License
The licensor grants you an additional copyright license to make changes and new works based on the software for any permitted purpose.
Patent License
The licensor grants you a patent license for the software that covers patent claims the licensor can license, or becomes able to license, that you would infringe by using the software.
Fair Use
You may have "fair use" rights for the software under the law. These terms do not limit them.
Internal Business Use
Use of the software for the internal business operations of you and your company is use for a permitted purpose.
No Other Rights
These terms do not allow you to sublicense or transfer any of your licenses to anyone else, or prevent the licensor from granting licenses to anyone else. These terms do not imply any other licenses.
Patent Defense
If you make any written claim that the software infringes or contributes to infringement of any patent, your patent license for the software granted under these terms ends immediately. If your company makes such a claim, your patent license ends immediately for work on behalf of your company.
Violations
The first time you are notified in writing that you have violated any of these terms, or done anything with the software not covered by your licenses, your licenses can nonetheless continue if you come into full compliance with these terms, and take practical steps to correct past violations, within 32 days of receiving notice. Otherwise, all your licenses end immediately.
No Liability
As far as the law allows, the software comes as is, without any warranty or condition, and the licensor will not be liable to you for any damages arising out of these terms or the use or nature of the software, under any kind of legal claim.
Definitions

You refers to the individual or entity agreeing to these terms.
Your company is any legal entity, sole proprietorship, or other kind of organization that you work for, plus all organizations that have control over, are under the control of, or are under common control with that organization.
