Cookie Policy
Exactly what this website stores in your browser — which is nothing of its own — and what Paddle's checkout may set once you ask to buy.
- Google Analytics runs only if you accept it. A notice asks on your first visit. Until you press Accept nothing is loaded from Google and no analytics cookie is set; Reject is as easy as Accept, and “Cookie settings” in the footer changes your choice at any time (section 5).
- To remember that choice, the site keeps one entry in your browser's local storage. Otherwise its public pages set nothing of their own (our staff-only admin area uses only what its sign-in needs — section 2). No advertising or social-media trackers.
- Our fonts are served from this website itself. No page loads fonts from Google or any other font service.
- Paddle, our merchant of record, may set cookies — but only after you ask for a checkout. Until then no Paddle script runs on this site.
1. What cookies and similar technologies are
A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to store. “Similar technologies” include browser storage (such as localStorage), pixels and scripts that read information from your device. The UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) and the EU ePrivacy rules say a website must ask your consent before storing or reading anything on your device, unless it is strictly necessary to provide a service you asked for.
2. What this website sets
The pages are static files. Their own scripts run the demonstrations, copy buttons and the changelog filter, and none of them stores or reads anything on your device, with two exceptions:
- Your cookie choice. One
localStorageentry,cotterpin-analytics, holdsgrantedordeniedso we do not ask on every page. It is strictly necessary to respect your choice, and it is never sent to us. - Google Analytics, only after you accept. See section 3.
We use no advertising, heat-mapping or social-media tools.
The one exception is our staff-only administration area (/admin), which only Cotterpin staff can sign in to. Signing in there uses the cookies and browser session storage that Microsoft's sign-in needs, and the area keeps the time of the last sign-in check in session storage. These are strictly necessary for the sign-in the staff member asked for. Nothing is set for anyone who does not sign in.
3. Third parties that can be involved
| Service | When | What it stores or reads | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paddle.js and Paddle checkout (Paddle.com Market Ltd) | Only after you click a Buy link, or when cotterpin subscribe opens our checkout page | Cookies and similar storage that Paddle's checkout needs to work, keep your checkout session and protect against fraud | Strictly necessary for the purchase you asked for |
| Google Analytics 4 (Google Ireland Limited) | Only after you press Accept in the cookie notice; never if you reject, or before you choose | The _ga and _ga_LVF0680L8K cookies (a random identifier for your browser, kept up to 2 years), to count visits and the pages viewed. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. Google keeps the analytics data linked to these cookies for 2 months. | Analytics: non-essential, only with your consent |
| Microsoft Azure Static Web Apps (our host) | Every page | No cookies are set for visitors to this site. Microsoft receives your IP address and request details to serve the page. | Not a cookie; see the Privacy Policy |
Paddle is an independent controller of what its checkout collects. Its own cookie notice lists the exact cookies it uses: see Paddle's privacy policy. Paddle's checkout opens only when you choose to buy, and sets only the cookies its checkout needs to take your payment securely; Paddle explains them and any choices you have.
Following a link to another website (for example paddle.net or ico.org.uk) takes you to a site with its own cookie policy.
4. Essential and non-essential
- Strictly necessary: only Paddle's checkout cookies, and only once you have asked to buy. These do not need your consent, because the purchase cannot happen without them.
- Non-essential: Google Analytics only, and only with your consent. No advertising or personalisation.
5. How we ask for consent
On your first visit a notice asks whether we may use Google Analytics cookies. Until you choose, and if you reject, nothing is loaded from Google and no analytics cookie is set. Reject and Accept are side by side and equally easy. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as a refusal and do not ask.
We remember your choice (see section 2). To change it, use Cookie settings at the foot of any page. If you withdraw consent, the site deletes Google Analytics' cookies and stops loading it. Paddle's script is still loaded only at the moment you ask for a checkout.
6. Controlling cookies in your browser
You can block or delete cookies in your browser's settings. Paddle's checkout needs these cookies whether you start it from a Buy link or from cotterpin subscribe, which opens the same checkout page in your browser. If you block them, the checkout may not work.
7. The Cotterpin software
The Cotterpin software is not a website and sets no cookies. What it stores on your machine, and what it sends, is set out in the Privacy Policy.
8. Changes and contact
We will update this policy before we change anything the website stores or loads. Questions: privacy@cotterpin.io.
